Los grandes cambios sociodemográficos acaecidos en nuestras sociedades en las últimas décadas del siglo pasado reflejaron el creciente interés por el fenómeno del envejecimiento y sus consecuencias para la vida individual y de las familias, de las comunidades y de los gobiernos. Foros, investigaciones, seminarios, entre otras actividades, fueron promovidas por organismos internacionales, agencias de gobierno, organizaciones sociales, gremiales y partidos políticos, interesados en conocer y explicar las diversas dimensiones y consecuencias del fenómeno; pero, sobre todo, para incidir en él. En el año 1979, la Organización Mundial de la Salud aprobó la primera resolución específica relativa a la atención del anciano y, en el año 1982, fue celebrada en Viena la Asamblea Mundial del Envejecimiento.
The great socio-demographic changes occurred in our societies in the last decades of the past century reflected the growing interest for the aging phenomenon and its consequences for the individual and family lives, for the lives of the communities and for the governments. Forums, investigations, seminars, among other activities, were promoted by international organizations, government agencies, social organizations, trade organizations and political parties, interested in knowing and explaining the diverse dimensions and consequences of the phenomenon; but, most of all, to have incidence with this phenomenon. In 1979, the World Health Organization approved the first specific resolution relative to the care of the elder adult and, in 1982, the World Assembly on Aging was held in Vienna.
