N2  - Salvador Allende Gossens, único médico que ha sido Presidente de Chile, fue un ferviente favorecedor de la seguridad social y la medicina social. Allende nació en la ciudad portuaria de Valparaíso el 26 de junio de 1908, murió en 1973. Cuando tenía 30 años de edad fue nombrado Ministro de Salubridad, Previsión y Asistencia Social; en 1970 fue electo Presidente de Chile. Su padre fue Salvador Allende Castro, abogado, trabajaba como defensor de quienes no podían costearse los servicios, le mostró las diferencias sociales, las desigualdades económicas y la necesidad de mantener la separación entre iglesia y Estado.
Salvador Allende Gossens, the only medical doctor who has been President of Chile, was a fervent supporter of social security and social medicine. Allende was born in the port city of Valparaiso on June 26 1908 and died in 1973. When he was 30 years old, he was appointed Health, Welfare and Social Assistance Minister; in 1970 he was elected president of Chile. His father was Salvador Allende Castro, an attorney at law who worked as a defender of those who could not afford social services; he taught him the social differences, the economic inequalities and the need to maintain the separation between Church and State
